I have always been accompanied by someone whenever I’ve stepped out of the house. Not for small things like grocery shopping or walking to my stop in the morning but for going around in the city to a mall or to a friend’s place in another locality.
Yes, you can say I’ve led a sheltered life and never known hardships but this was in some form a necessity considering where I live.
I’ve always been ferried to and from my destinations by my parents or friends or even just a designated driver. So I’ve never really known how to travel alone. I had always wanted to, but there was always a convenient alternative available.
But yesterday…due to a series of events, I had to commute from home to a place and back again.
And the experience was thrilling.
You see, dad’s car broke down and mum was at her job while my sister was at school and I was off from university. But, it so happened that an unscheduled meeting with my internship mentor popped up and I had to go. I mean, this meeting was huge! Me and my partner had been looking forward to it for weeks!
So, after a lot of planning, nervous pacing and mental encouragement, I set out on an adventure. Mind you, I’d never gone anywhere alone and so I had planned my route as exactly as I could.
I took a taxi to the metro station. I had to manage my wallet and mobile and papers and be extra alert. I bought a ticket and managed to figure out my route. I didn’t ask for help. The words got stuck in my throat every time I tried to approach an employee…I don’t know why.
I had to call the receptionist of my meeting place to figure out how to actually get to the building once I’d gotten off the metro. Thankfully, I found that place quite easily and had the meeting.
After the meeting, my friend and I loitered around in a nearby mall and then she dropped me to the metro station again. I retraced my steps home but all the time I had such a proud feeling in my chest.
It really gave me a sense of independence and I realized how easy it actually was and that my friends had been doing it for a long time already. It have me courage that I could go wherever I wanted without having to depend on dad or a friend.
I reached home safe and sound and heaved a sigh of relief. What a marvelous adventure it had been!
Now I’m more willing and ready to tackle another new thing. Bring it on.
